This Semester

Bailing Wire

The wire firefly was my favorite project this semester. As soon as we were told about what we were doing, I knew I wanted to do a firefly. I had the idea of putting the light bulb at the end to replicate the glowing butt of lightening bugs from the very beginning. Once I began working with the wire, I realized how much harder it was going to be than I originally thought. I worked on it nearly every night- gaining cuts and blisters along the way. I would sit in my boyfriend’s dorm, watching YouTube with him while cutting and working the wire.I started losing a little faith in my project when I finished the third section of the body. Once I started the legs and wings, I was back to being excited about the finished product. Once I was done, and added in the lightbulb, I was extremely proud of myself for my work.Making the firefly was an amazing learning experience. It was the first time I had built anything like that myself. I’ve worked with clay before in high school, but even then, it wasn’t anything even remotely this difficult. It was amazing getting to hold something I made myself in my hands and feel the weight of it. I usually get a bit discouraged after seeing other peoples works, but in this case, I got more and more inspired after seeing everyone’s pieces. Even though everyone did an amazing job, and all the pieces were extremely well done and beautiful, I still felt excited to show mine off. This is still the piece I’m most proud of, out of everything I’ve done. I’ve created things cleaner and prettier, but this was difficult, and I’m glad I prevailed.
